Fergus O’Neill hit a defiant unbeaten fifty, but Craig Overton’s five-wicket haul saw Nottinghamshire slip to a first home Rothesay County Championship defeat in over two years.

O’Neill made 54 not out from 105 balls from number nine, but the hosts, chasing 473 to win, were dismissed for 166 shortly after lunch.

Such has been the recent strength of Nottinghamshire in this format that the defeat, by 306 runs, was a first at Trent Bridge since May 2024, and only a second in red-ball cricket in the past 23 matches.

Resuming on 47-3 with a requirement to bat out the final day, Jack Haynes resisted almost to lunch to make 24 and stand through the loss of the first three morning session wickets.

Overton was responsible for two of those, with Migael Pretorius claiming the other, and it was the latter who eventually did for Haynes as Notts took lunch at 138-8.

O’Neill, unbeaten on 39 at the first break, went to his half-century shortly after the resumption to add to a first-innings career-best bowling return of 6/72, which was enough to see Notts to 150.

However, when Dillon Pennington was dismissed, the hosts had only one bastion of resistance remaining.

Although Mohammad Ali held out admirably alongside O’Neill for six further overs, stand-in Somerset captain Overton completed his five to seal victory for his side.
