Despite a battling performance in an uphill situation, Nottinghamshire were eventually overcome on day four in Hove as Sussex took victory by seven wickets.

Mitch Hay resisted for 27 from 73 deliveries to haul the visitors to 193 all out in their second innings, thereby setting Sussex 76 to win.

Wickets for Olly Stone, Brett Hutton, and debutant Mukesh Kumar ensured the hosts would not have it all their own way, but an unbeaten 38 from George Thomas saw them over the line.

Notts had resumed on their overnight 149-7 in their second innings, leading by 31, with hopes of repeating the tail-wag they had displayed in the first innings.

With Hutton, who had led that lower-order resistance first time round, at the crease to begin the day alongside Hay, the possibility was raised, but he fell to Ari Karvelas three overs in.

That saw Greek international Karvelas complete his five-for, before spinner Jack Carson then did for Hay and Tom Giles, both lbw.

The visitors began the chase brightly as Tom Haines shouldered arms to Stone and was bowled for eight, before Hutton pinned Tom Clark lbw second ball, to leave Sussex 14-2.

A 35-run third-wicket stand between Thomas and Charlie Tear broke the back of the chase, allowing Sussex to reach lunch without further loss and in need of just 28 more runs.

Despite Kumar comprehensively bowling Tear for 15 shortly after the restart, Thomas proceeded to add 12 more alongside 15 from Oli Carter to take the hosts across the line.

Liam Patterson-White was introduced late on in an effort to provoke a collapse, but the game concluded with Carter hitting him for four as Sussex emerged victorious shortly after 1:30pm.
