Half-centurion Jack Haynes reflected on an up-and-down arm-wrestle of a first day against Surrey at Trent Bridge.

Haynes, who made 82, poured praise on the in-form Joe Clarke, who ended the day unbeaten on 129, and provided an insight into his 146-run stand alongside him for the fourth wicket.

He also assessed conditions, reflected on his own knock, and acknowledged Ben Duckett and Fergus O’Neill’s contributions as Nottinghamshire enjoyed positive periods to close on 317-7.
