Kathryn Bryce reflected on the “really great” feeling of securing both domestic T20 trophies after The Blaze triumphed at Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup Finals Day.

On a damp Saturday at Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground, The Blaze were forced to wait until just before 5pm to get their semi-final against Essex, which should have begun at 11am, underway.

However, once they were finally able to play a five-over dash, with the other last-four tie between Somerset and Surrey going the same way in order to make space for a 13-over final, it was plain sailing.

The Chelmsford outfit were dispatched by nine wickets in the first outing, before Surrey, who won their semi-final by a tense two runs, were downed by seven wickets in a final that finished just before 10pm.

“It’s really great to have the two T20 trophies, and it sets us up really well to go for the Metro Bank [One Day Cup],” said Bryce, who returned 4/18 in the final before hitting an unbeaten 30-ball 38.

“It was a fantastic final for us, the way we bowled and restricted them, [and] in the field as well. In any format they play, we know Surrey will be really aggressive.

“[But] we were clear on our plans, and taking wickets is always the key,” she added, shortly after hitting the winning runs alongside her younger sister Sarah to secure a second piece of silverware this summer.

“I think this has been a great competition,” she continued. There’s been a lot of competitive games, a lot of the tier two teams have been pushing hard.

“It’s [also] made it exciting being part of the whole summer, rather than being over near the start.”

The 28-year-old Scotland captain noted that the tricky conditions in Manchester, that necessitated such a huge delay to the action, presented another challenge.

However, she was pleased with the intent shown by the umpires to ensure the contests were decided on the field with full games of cricket, rather than the potential lottery of a bowl-off.

“I think knowing the forecast, and what that would mean for the conditions… but it’s been great for the day having three games of cricket played, rather than bowl-offs.

"The way that they set up the day as well was quite different, knowing they hadn't just set different time slots for each game, that their priority was actually to try and get cricket in for every game.

"I think that was a bit different, but I think it's probably been really great for the day actually having three games of cricket played.”

Bryce was also full of praise for her teammates, paying particular attention to the strong hitting of Emma Jones - promoted to the unorthodox role of opener - across both games.

“The way Jonesy (Emma Jones) played in both games was fantastic,” she said. “She put us ahead of the rate and made it easier for the rest of us coming in.

"A lot of people were very up and down throughout the day, the highs, lows, and just feeling like a lot of hanging around for not much and a lot of unknowns.”

“But I think when we knew [what was happening], and were really clear, people switched on really well.”

Now, Bryce is left to target the one remaining trophy - the One Day Cup, of which The Blaze sit top of the tree with three games to go, and a potential final at Utilita Bowl awaiting on 19 September.

"It's definitely been talked about a little bit,” she said, when asked how far an unprecedented treble has entered into The Blaze’s thinking.

“But you don't want to get too far ahead of yourselves as well because we're really lucky to be in the position to be able to do it.

“Equally, knowing that we have to turn up every game and get ourselves in the position… you have to get yourself on that dancefloor to be able to go out there and perform.

“That's what Craig [Cumming, Head Coach] talks about a lot, making sure we're in the position to be able to be there on Finals Day, and then to be able to get over the line.

"[It's] really great to have the two trophies going into this next couple of weeks of the Metro Bank [One Day Cup],” continued Bryce.

“We're in a really good position with that, and it sets us up really well going into these couple of weeks.”
