Legendary Outlaws all-rounder Samit Patel has announced his retirement from domestic cricket.
Patel, who scored over 21,000 runs and took in excess of 700 wickets for Nottinghamshire, has brought the curtain down on a 24-year county career.
Having begun his journey at Trent Bridge as a 14-year-old before making his senior debut two years later, he secured six trophies in Nottinghamshire colours – twice winning the County Championship (2005/2010), T20 Blast (2017/2020), and the domestic List A trophy (2013/2017).
In addition to the white-ball double, 2017 saw Patel play a crucial role in Notts’ 50-over final victory, named man-of-the-match in the T20 Blast final, and become the first Notts batter to hit consecutive double-centuries in the County Championship.
At the conclusion of that summer, he was named the Professional Cricketers Association’s Most Valuable Player and Player of the Year – the first Notts recipient of the latter award since Sir Richard Hadlee in 1987.
In 2021, he became the fifth man, and first English player, to do the T20 double of taking 250 wickets and scoring 5,000 runs – and in 2022 he played a leading part in Trent Rockets’ men winning The Hundred.
A 60-time England international, he completed his county career with two summers at neighbouring Derbyshire.
“Samit’s achievements have quite rightly earned him a place not just in Nottinghamshire history, but in the affections of all who follow the domestic game,” said Director of Cricket Mick Newell.
“His ability to turn a game in his favour through his skill, talent and sheer will to win was remarkable.
“Add to that his passion for representing Nottinghamshire across 22 years, and it’s no surprise that he was, and remains, such a firm favourite with our members and supporters.
“We wish him all the best as his time in the English domestic game comes to a close, and look forward to seeing the next chapter of his career unfold.”
