Wily seam bowler Abbas made a name for himself as a master of English conditions during six seasons with Leicestershire and Hampshire between 2018 and 2024, during which he claimed 259 Championship wickets, with 11 five-wicket hauls, at a miserly average of just 19.70.
A prolific proponent of the wobble-seam delivery, he snared 240 First-Class wickets in Pakistani domestic cricket at just 21.89 apiece before making his Test debut on a tour of the West Indies in April 2017.
The Men in Green recorded a 2-1 win in that three-match series, with Abbas claiming a vital five-for in the third Test that was instrumental in helping Pakistan to a 101-run, series-sealing, victory.
He was signed up by Leicestershire for his first stint in county cricket in 2018, and three years later joined Hampshire, where he made an instant impact in recording a hat-trick on his home debut against Middlesex, finishing with innings figures of 6/11.
Such was the regard that Abbas was held in at Hampshire, a famous tale unfolded whereby Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola asked for temporary access to Abbas’ unoccupied suite while City were staying at the Utilita Bowl hotel, but was refused in favour of the seamer.
